According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI),
“Mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions [bolded by me] that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.
Serious mental illnesses include major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder [bolded by me]. The good news about mental illness is that recovery is possible [bolded by me].”
If you or someone you love suffers from a mental illness, please know that there is help out there, and that you are not alone. The Sisterhood of Strength aims to provide a network of women who suffer from a mental illness and choose to express themselves creatively.
Good Evening, I love this outlook on Mental illness. My family does not understand my “major depression” and PTSD. I feel so alone b/c no one understands how my thinking is rage and how I can have an anxiety attack within a moment. I now stay at home when I feel or even think a anxiety comes on. You see, my anxiety attacks are blasts of rage…
I am under meds and they are working as long as I take them faithfully. At times, I still get anxiety and so very depressed. My days are of crying and at times hopelessness.
I am starting to write and journal. I feel their may be a story to be told with my journeys in this life and most of all I love God and read the bible often to help me through these attacks.
Last, please share if you have a sisterhood here in Colorado (Denver).
Warmly, Michelle
